Juried Shows, what does that mean?

Some times I post the exciting news that one of our artists has been juried into a show or an art event.  Why are we so excited, well here is a short explanation.  Most of the information, I got from Laurel Peterson Gregory Blog site, just to reconfirm my  own experiences. Her sculptures are wonderful, click on her name and check out her work.

A juried show is when the artist must apply to participate or to be included into the show.  The artist is hoping that the quality of their artwork will make the cut as one of the best in the exhibit.  Sometimes the artist has to send a resume, but always they must submit photos/samples of your artwork and a jurying fee. So next time you see a post that one of our artists has made it into a juried show, whether they win an award or not know that they were one of the best,  Being included into a juried show is reward enough just to have been selected to exhibit.  (There are a few exceptions on the local level when they say juried but mean there will be awards given to the top pieces.)

Some of the shows are highly competitive and others not so much.  The higher the prize money, the more competitive and the higher the fee in most cases. I want to start a series on our Facebook page informing our audience of some of the awards our artists have received in past years.  I'm starting with Hilda.  Hilda passed almost a year ago.  After she joined the Two Rivers Society of Painters eight years ago, she started entering juried shows.  She had never really shown her work before and most of it was in storage.  She did very, very well in exhibiting her work. She won awards from the Tennessee Watercolor Society, Pennyroyal Juried Art Exhibition and the DAC Regional Exhibition. We miss Hilda, she was a wonderful mentor.  She was in her eighty when started competing and showing her work.  Hilda would have turned 90 this last March.  We all miss her.
